For mother's day

Lately, I've been meeting mothers who had to face the possibility of having their children removed from their sides and mothers who had to leave their children under the care of the father.

The sorrow in their eyes is just too sad to bear.

My silent wish for the upcoming mother's day: No mothers shall have their children taken away from them by force, due to circumstance or lack of options.

And so I seek shelter at House

'Graffiti' in the toilet of Spa Esprit, House

I had it ALL planned. My dream Friday off would start off with a leisurely drive to Kai's school.

I'd then kiss Kai goodbye and together with my DSLR camera to take wonderful pictures of my day off, I would drive to Spa Esprit at House for a relaxing 90 minute pre-natal massage followed by a relaxing lunch at its cafe.

Then, I'd head off to Uniqlo at Tampines 1 to check out what the fuss is all about.

*BIG SIGH*

Relaxing with a cup of ginger tea at the waiting area

But it didn't materialise.

It all started with Kai having a fever on early Friday morning (12am). I won't go into the details but it involved me rushing out of the house late without my camera, sitting through TWO traffic jams on ECP such that I arrived half an hour late for my appointment.

Having said that, I really enjoyed my short time away in House. The spa was empty on a Friday morning, and the environment (and the fact that it was in Dempsey) made me feel like I was on a holiday.

My blue cheese and bacon mini-burgers

I rejected all the healthy lunch options at the cafe and went for their mini-burgers (with blue cheese and bacon). I really liked the salty sweet potato chips^ (in orange) and the fries were either sprinkled with truffle salt or oil. Yum!

The burgers, however, were a disappointment. It was dry and I should have known the outcome when the recommended doneness in the menu was "Medium Well". Anyway, I really shouldn't be eating unpasturised cheese now but... the blue cheese was calling to me!

I had to rush back to pick Kai up from my MIL, who so kindly looked after Kai for me. Nonetheless, yes I did enjoy Spa Esprit at House; it's worth a visit. (By the way, they open till 1am on Friday and Saturday. Who would go for a massage at 12am? Very busy working professionals or weekend revelers?)

Picnic in the evening

The beach is peaceful and quiet on a weekday evening, even at the stretch near the East Coast Food Centre.

Kai and I set up camp on the beach while Terence popped over to buy us a picnic dinner at the food centre. It's nice to just sit, watch the sky turn dark, watch the stars come out, and just chat about the day that just passed with your loved ones.

Pampered. Polished

There's really nothing like chilling out in a big, bright, spacious nail spa (Polished) on a lazy Saturday morning. The only tough decision I had to make was which nail colour to use. How insanely frivolous compared to the manic madness of a working day.

Heaven...

I decided to push the bar of frivolity and requested for a 15-min leg massage (for an additional S$15 only) on top of the pedicure. I even had tiny red cherries painted on my big toes. My first ever nail art! Even Kai was thrilled.

I DO deserve it. It's getting increasingly difficult for me to bend down and trim my own toenails, what with a growing tummy and all.

Hello elephant!

We asked Kai to say "hello" to the elephants at the zoo. He clung to the wooden railings and screamed at the top of his lungs: "HELLO ELEPHANT! HELLO!" a couple of times.

Don't bring a DSLR camera on holiday if you are pregnant

Because you end up taking photographs only at the airport.

Most of the time, our camera was sitting in a locked safe in the hotel. I mean, seriously, I have a toddler that weighs 12kg and more. I'm pregnant. We've toys, sun screen, hats, towels, mats etc. to bring the beach and back. And what. A digital SLR camera too?

Terence says next time we will bring a compact camera when we travel with Kai.

But we had wonderful memories of our Langkawi beach holiday with Kai inked with us forever. It was the first time he dared to 'swim' in the ocean. He plucked sea snails--big and small--off the sand when the tide was receding, and placed them back gently again. He saw hermit crabs live, not in a cartoon, and a real scarecrow in the field, not in a book.

La Mer

Terence and I love nature, and we would prefer to get out of the city (any city) ASAP when we go on holiday.

For our wedding anniversary in February, Terence brought me to Angsana Bintan which is essentially a beach resort. I really needed a break and as usual, he did all the planning. :)

I don't know how the tiny crabs make the swirl patterns^ and sand baubles that we see on the beach. But they are really pretty.

There were plenty of hermit crabs^ to catch on the beach too. So take your pick.

Walk along the beach at low tide and you'd be surprised at what you can find. Sometimes I see objects^ that make me wish for access to Google there and then.

Marina Barrage

Marina Barrage is Singapore's 15th reservoir (I didn't know we have that many!), and it is going to be located next to one of the country's integrated resorts (IRs).

I think the place will be more exciting in the future when the IR is completed and when we have more activities organised there. In the mean time, it is just an OK place to bring your family to early in the morning for a picnic on the rooftop lawn or in the evening for a stroll. There are some shelters for resting along the dam, which are great for photo-taking and of course, a snack or two.

The cafe (the only one there) we went to for breakfast was average and please DO NOT order the coffee. We didn't go for the guided tour, but I think it'd be educational for school-going children.

Special of the day: I'm expecting...

...a new baby and i feel special. :-)

Which kind of explains why I haven't been blogging for months. The first trimester for me this second time round has been filled with nausea. I didn't throw up but I keep having what I'd call a gagging moment where I'd just stand still, green in the face till the nausea passes. Then there's the tiredness that plagues me. All I want to do everyday after work, after I finally put Kai to bed is to SLEEP.

We have been doing plenty over the weekends with Kai and I've been trying to find time to exercise too, but I just didn't have the energy to turn on the laptop, edit my photos, and write.

So finally, the first trimester is over and I'm now 14 weeks pregnant. We will find out the sex of the baby in about two weeks' time.

I've just dropped Kai off at his first art class with the Art Bootcamp along Tanjong Katong Road. He seems to enjoy drawing quite a bit at home, so I've been looking for schools online. Art Bootcamp seems to be well recommended by parents on Kiasuparents.com.sg (!).

So here I am, seated at a cafe just a few shophouses away taking a breather from the morning rush to buy breakfast, feed Kai, get him dressed, and drive through the mad traffic along Mountbatten road. So finally... some time for myself to just blog and relax!
