This blog entry is based on actual events, and characters' names have not been changed though direct quotes have been modified to make the events more realistic to readers. The actual characters do NOT speak like that in real life.

Kena S**!

Note: The headline is in the spirit of all things Singlish and Hokkien (Read Joy's account of Singalella).

Monday morning (around 12am): Woke up with a funny feeling in my stomach. Recognised it as something ominiously similar to my last food poisoning episode a year plus ago. Grabbed "Stardust", went to the loo, and waited. It wasn't that bad initially. I still could read a few pages. Then all hell broke loose; or rather, both ends of my orifice let loose. It got so bad that I could be "doing the Merlion" and just have water gushing out through the other end BOTH at the same time. Sometimes, it doesn't even take place on the toilet bowl, but on the floor.

See. Really kena sai right?

How come I don't sit on the toilet bowl leh, you ask. If you had to go through this from roughly 12am to 4.30am continuously, I tell you, you would be too tired and in too much pain to be sitting on the bowl as well.

Sweet Terence just sat through the entire episode with me, and tried to clean me up as much as possible.

That's called true love, understand.

Love you deep deep, Terence.

Suffice to say both of us were exhausted when it was over. I didn't even go through so much pain (in fact, I didn't go through any pain at all) during labour.

And the end of the whole thing, he said this to me: Wah, and you brought a book in with you?!

I knew it'd be a long night what, was my reply.

Books I never finished reading

Now that all my books are neatly displayed in a highly accessible bookshelf, I actually found books I never read or never completed:
1. The Sparrow Intriguing. I think I read it half way. Did I borrow this from someone? (Corinne???)
2. The Cat from Hue: A Vietnam War Story It got repetitive after a while. But you can literally smell the gun fire just by reading the book, and it's from a journalist's perspective.
3. Crytonomicon Read the first page, and got hit by the Z-monster immediately. It's got high ratings on Amazon though.

I think I'll discover more unread books along the way. Let me know if you want to borrow anything on this list (or not)... at least it'd get read! :-|

Cooking's ain't a chore

Here's Terence cooking up a storm. With the help of the new maid, Nurwanti, everything is so much easier now. He's instructed her to chop the chicken, peel the pototoes, and most importantly, wash up!

This marked our first homecooked meal at the new place. Curry chicken it was. He was so pleased with just how much he accomplished today, and the yummy dinner he cooked. He then proceeded to inspect the new, white day curtains, and touched it with his curry-stained hands.

I was on the phone with Florence, and it took mountains of self-restrain not to scream bloody murder at the new look the curtains just acquired.

It was saved by moi, and the solvent that came with the Dryel dry cleaning pack.

I just finished dinner, and I spied curry stain on the white upholstery covering the dinner chair.

Motherhood
I asked Wanti yesterday if she missed her three-year-old son. She said, "No." I find it hard to believe. Any mother would miss her child. I miss Kai everyday, and I see him everyday. Then I think about how she won't get to see her son for another two years (?), and I feel really sad.

Finally, curtains we love

Another reason why I love my husband: He lets me make new curtains for our new place although it's rented.

Most people won't bother. They'd just live with whatever curtains, if any, the landlord gives them. But I really disliked the ones left behind by previous tenants in what is now Kai's room and study, and the blue suede ones in the master bedroom. We even had day curtains made for the living room (Indian cotten with embrioderied flowers!).

I would spend more money on nicer fabrics if we actually own the place. But instead we chose, in Emily's words, fabrics that were "C&G"--i.e. cheap and good. (Emily from Window World.) The only exception were curtains in Kai's room. They cost more than S$30/metre, but I really wanted something cheery for his room and I insisted on blackouts too.

All in all, we spent about S$1,500. Our landlord would be pleased, and they're very lucky to have us as their tenants!!!

My books! MUACK! MUACK!

I love my husband. He spent his leave day training the new maid, and unpacking boxes in the storeroom. He found my shoes and got the maid to place all our books in our new Ikea bookshelf. I must say, some of the Ikea stuff are quite decent in terms of price, quality, and aesthetics. Here's our new reading area, which has to share a space with the cat condo and their bowls.

Neil Gaiman anyone?

Chien Way sent a blog--http://community.livejournal.com/lifeafterharry/--that gives hope to people suffering from the Harry-Potter-withdrawal-symptoms.

So I picked "Stardust" by Neil Gaiman, a title suggested on the blog. The starting reminds me of the children/adult fiction you expect from "Narnia", "Out of the silent planet", and "Perelandra"--all by CS Lewis. I didn't expect to find it in San Bookshop in United Square, but I did.

Another reason why I picked the Neil Gaiman title was out of curiosity since Resse is a big fan of his comic series "The Sandman". She read them all in Borders, UK!
